Born in Nicosia, Cyprus, from artists parents -my mother is a painter and my father a writer/historian- I grew up in a rather unconventional family environment surrounded by creative activity and artistic stimuli. For more than 15 years all my spare time was filled with dancing and painting lessons. In an attempt to differentiate myself from the fine arts education tradition that runs in the family I moved to the UK to explore the world of graphic design and illustration. Coming back to Cyprus I worked for two years in post production but I realized very soon that I could not escape who I am. I went to Athens where I was admitted at the School of Fine Arts. I received a BA and an MFA from the university in Athens with honors. Upon my return I took up teaching and at the same time I kept working and developing my work at my personal studio. Finding a balance between teaching and producing/exhibiting/promoting your own work is very challenging but the past year has been a very productive period for me on both levels and I plan to keep it this way, seeking opportunities to experiment, acquire new knowledge and participate in projects in Cyprus and abroad.
My artistic practice negotiates issues relevant to women, femininity, expressions of physicality and oppression within the contemporary sociopolitical context, exploring at the same time the formulative and destructive forces and processes that emerge and drive human behaviors. I am very much interested in how the system and the social framework forces people into moulds. The process of uncovering our instincts and distinguishing between what we really want and what is imposed on us, is one of the crucial elements that I focus on. It is a process within ourselves and a filtering of what we accept from every aspect of our external environment. How as mankind, simultaneously, we destroy and create. The problems and solutions that come to each of us from this and based on our instincts how we manage to survive in a new and often unhealthy environment. We destroy and then we appear as creators trying to produce an artificial imitation of what we caused to extinct. And we do this deviating dramatically from the natural processes, in ways that often turn out to have a harmful effect on ourselves. Is it our need to feel powerful and dominant and to have control? Is it our fear towards death or perhaps all the above?
